SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Pacific Gas and Electric Company will send 10 electric crews and other personnel to San Diego County tomorrow to assist the local utility with power restoration efforts in areas devastated by wildfires. Answering calls for aid from San Diego Gas and Electric Company, PG&E employees will help rebuild electric distribution lines destroyed in the fires by installing new poles and stringing new wire.
"Wildfires have caused extensive damage to electrical equipment in the San Diego area leaving thousands of customers without power," said Jeff Butler, Pacific Gas and Electric Company's senior vice president of energy delivery. "We are proud to send experienced and dedicated employees to help San Diego Gas and Electric restore power for their customers."
In all, more than 90 PG&E employees will be deployed to San Diego County. The electric crews come from several different areas throughout northern and central California including San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento, Auburn, Stockton, Fresno and Bakersfield. Employees are expected to stay in the San Diego area for approximately three weeks based on the amount of damaged equipment that needs to be repaired.
PG&E is a member of the California Utilities Emergency Association (CUEA), an organization that provides emergency operations support for efficient communications and coordination among government agencies and utilities throughout California. This organization calls on one another to assist in power restoration efforts after major events like hurricanes, winter storms and wildfires.
Last winter PG&E assisted utilities in Oregon and Washington after a vicious winter storm left 1.5 million customers in the region without electricity. In 2004, 24 PG&E crews helped rebuild thousands of power poles in Florida after hurricanes Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne wreaked havoc on the state. In 2003, PG&E employees helped restore power in Southern California when wildfires destroyed electric lines that year as well.
