Statement From Americans for Balanced Energy Choices Executive Director Joe Lucas On Governor Sebelius' Open Letter Regarding the Holcomb Power Plant

Posted on: Thursday, 25 October 2007, 21:00 CDT

WASHINGTON, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a statement from Americans for Balanced Energy Choices Executive Director Joe Lucas On Governor Sebelius' open letter regarding the Holcomb power plant:

We are dismayed by the Governor's recent open letter to Kansans. It appears she is convinced that some "perfect" energy option exists. Unfortunately, it doesn't. Every energy resource--including coal--has its challenges. In her statement, Governor Sebelius displays a pessimistic view of how technology is rapidly making American coal a clean energy option, including the capture and storage of carbon dioxide.

What the governor doesn't address in her statement is how Kansas and its neighbors will meet their growing demand for electricity while policymakers bide time waiting for the "perfect" energy resource. And, she also doesn't detail her plans to replace the economic development opportunities lost for those counties in southwestern Kansas which would have significantly benefited from approval of the Holcomb power plant.

There has never been an environmental challenge presented to the coal-based electricity sector for which technology has not provided the ultimate solution. We are convinced that responding to the challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions will not be the exception to the rule. We look forward to continuing the dialogue with Governor Sebelius and her staff to ensure that they eventually come to share that conviction.
