Green Mountain Power Encourages Hybrid Vehicle Purchases

In addition to an aggressive program to reduce fuel usage in Company vehicles, becoming carbon neutral in its operations and being a leader by publishing an annual sustainability report, Green Mountain Power is now encouraging employees to reduce their own carbon footprint by purchasing fuel efficient vehicles. Eligible Green Mountain Power employees will receive a cash incentive for purchasing vehicles that have the best fuel economy on the market.
"We have worked very hard to reduce Green Mountain Power's impact on the environment by converting our fleet to biodiesel, purchasing hybrid vehicles where possible for company use, and using the most efficient vehicles available for the required work," said Mary Powell, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. "Offering our employees an incentive for purchasing fuel efficient vehicles is the next logical step for ensuring that all of us at Green Mountain Power make positive changes to help the environment."
The Company will offer employees a $1,500 incentive for a new car or a $750 incentive for a used vehicle included in the EPA's Smart Way Elite category, which currently includes the Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid, and Toyota Camry Hybrid.
"We recognize that in Vermont, transportation is the largest generator of greenhouse gases, and we all have much we can do to reduce the effect of our travel. Encouraging our employees to choose an environmentally friendly vehicle is one more step in the right direction," said Ms. Powell. "It also is valuable to us in helping to attract and retain employees who are serious about protecting the environment."
Dan Goldman is a Green Mountain Power employee who is considering purchasing a hybrid. "My wife and I really want to reduce our carbon footprint. I do what I can, including occasionally biking to work, but it is hard with a young family to spend the extra money to replace our gas guzzler. The incentive Green Mountain Power is offering makes it possible for me to think about replacing it with a car that gets much better mileage," said Mr. Goldman.
