ENERGY STAR CFLs Light the Way to Change the World, for Just 99 Cents

Posted on: Monday, 29 October 2007, 15:00 CDT

How many lightbulbs does it take to change the world? It's an old punchline, but it's no joke. Northwest utilities have joined the national ENERGY STAR®"Change A Light, Change The World" campaign to urge residents to replace 2.3 million inefficient incandescent lightbulbs with high efficiency compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs) for their five most-used lights.

Now through November 30, 2007, participating retailers are offering select ENERGY STAR CFLs for as little as $.99. Retailers supporting the campaign include Wal-Mart, Fred Meyer, participating TrueValue Stores, Albertsons, Bi-Mart and participating Ace Hardware stores.

Utility customers can find a participating retailer in their area at www.northwestenergystar.com. The lightbulbs installed as a result of the campaign will save a combined 147 million kilowatt hours of electricity -- enough to power 13,000 average Northwest homes each year for seven years -- and $13.2 million in energy costs per year, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

CFLs make a big difference

Home lighting accounts for 20 percent of home energy consumption, making it a great place to start saving energy and reducing carbon emissions. "If every U.S. household installed five new CFLs today, each home would save $60 a year in energy costs and collectively prevent greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing eight million cars from American roads," said John Morris, utility manager, Northwest ENERGY STAR.

The Northwest leads the nation in supporting the goals of the national ENERGY STAR program and in encouraging customers to install CFLs, premium efficiency appliances and other products, and energy efficient homes.

ENERGY STAR was introduced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 as a voluntary labeling program designed to identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Utilities who support Northwest ENERGY STAR help customers save energy, encourage energy efficient technologies and protect the Northwest environment.
