Train Cars Derail in Tenn; No Injuries
GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. – A freight train sideswiped another in this Nashville suburb, causing about three dozen cars to derail, but there were no injuries or hazardous leaks.
Several fire engines were dispatched to the scene after the accident late Thursday, but they were recalled after crews determined no hazardous cargo was leaking, officials said. No evacuations were necessary.
“We had two trains, one northbound and one southbound. One was on a siding and they sideswiped,” said Garrick Francis, a spokesman for CSX Transportation in Jacksonville, Fla. Some cars on each train derailed.
CSX had to reroute several trains around the accident site, which is on a main north-south line. By dawn, rail cars still on the tracks were being moved away so work could begin to clear the wreckage and repair the track. Cranes were brought in to begin setting the upended and overturned cars upright.
