European Union Funded Newcastle University Study Preliminary Results Indicate Organic Foods Healthier, Safer: Four Year Study Finds Higher Levels of Antioxidants and Vitamin E in Milk From Organic Herds Versus Conventional Herds

CLARINDA, Iowa, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Naturally Iowa, Inc. (OTC Pink Sheets: NLIA) announced today that according to the Organic Trade Association, a four year Newcastle University study has announced preliminary findings that indicate that levels of antioxidants in milk from organic herds contain up to 60 to 80 percent more antioxidants than conventionally produced milk in the summer, and 50 to 60 percent higher levels in the winter. Additionally, the preliminary results indicate that milk produced from organic herds contain higher levels of Vitamin E.
According to William Horner, President and CEO of Naturally Iowa Inc., the new findings could potentially have a significant impact on the growing organic food and dairy industries. "As the scientific community continues to gather evidence and to conduct peer review, we believe that consumer interest in organic food and dairy will continue to grow. The study conducted by Professor Carlo Leifert of the Tesco Centre for Organic Agriculture based at Newcastle University in the United Kingdom is important, because the four year, $25 million study is one of the largest studies of the organic food industry to date. We believe that the preliminary results validate what organic producers and processors such as Naturally Iowa have believed about the benefits of organic food and dairy consumption."
According to the Organic Trade Association, "This study may be the breakthrough that helps prove what many in the organic sector believe to be true about food grown using organic practices," said Caren Wilcox, OTA's Executive Director, on learning of the findings. The QLIF Project, set up in March 2004, is funded with a grant of 18 million Euros ($25.8 million) from the EU. The research program involves 31 research centers, companies and universities in Europe and elsewhere. To read more about QLIF, go to its web site, at http://www.qlif.org/." According to Sustainable Food News, the Newcastle University study findings measured the differences between organic and conventional produce as well as the differences between milk produced from organic and conventional herds. "Professor Carlo Leifert, the co-ordinator of the European Union-funded project, said the differences were so marked that organic produce would help to increase the nutrient intake of people not eating the recommended five portions a day of fruit and vegetables. 'If you have just 20 percent more antioxidants and you can't get your kids to do five a day, then you might just be okay with four a day,' he said. This weekend the Food Standards Agency confirmed that it was reviewing the evidence before deciding whether to change its advice. Ministers and the agency have said there are no significant differences between organic and ordinary produce. Researchers grew fruit and vegetables and reared cattle on adjacent organic and nonorganic sites on a 725-acre farm attached to Newcastle University, and at other sites in Europe. Leifert said the government was wrong about there being no difference between organic and conventional produce. 'There is enough evidence now that the level of good things is higher in organics,' he said." The Company's main product lines are organic and all-natural fluid milk, ice cream and drinkable yogurt. The acronym PLA stands for "Polylactic Acid." This substance represents the final step in a process, engineered by Natureworks, which utilizes all-natural ingredients from corn to create a compostable material. Organic milk in PLA bottles landed on grocery store shelves in October, 2005. Naturally Iowa, Inc. operates its state-of-the-art 28,000 sq. foot dairy processing facility in Clarinda, Iowa.
