One-stop Shopping Boosts Supermarkets/hypermarkets
Supermarkets/hypermarkets was the leading distribution channel for packaged food products in 2006, followed by independent food stores. However, while supermarkets/hypermarkets continued to gain share, independent food stores lost share dramatically during the review period. Supermarket/hypermarkets offer the widest selection of packaged food and provide a one-stop shopping stop for consumers, which made them increasingly popular. In addition, supermarkets/hypermarkets' expansion into smaller cities and rural areas boosted the channel's share.
More Healthy Alternatives and Wider Product Ranges Will Be Seen
Packaged food is expected to see continued strong volume growth during the forecast period, while constant value will be supported by consumers trading up to higher-priced products. The economic growth rate will be most pronounced along developed coastal cities and developing rural regions, however. In developed cities, consumers will become increasingly sophisticated and new product development will follow suit, with strong development of value-added and HW packaged food. Simultaneously, in developing rural regions, consumers will trade up from loose to packaged food due to rising disposable incomes and wider product availability in the forecast period. Baby food will see the most dynamic growth, assisted by consumers' rising incomes and concern over providing optimum nutrition for their children.
