CHELSEA, Mass., Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- 25 6th-graders from the Clark Avenue School in Chelsea received an up-close view of solar power today as they were on hand for the start of installation of 252 solar panels at Parkside Commons, the new energy efficient and ecologically friendly apartment community now under construction at 100 Stockton Street in Chelsea.
The youngsters and representatives of the John M. Corcoran & Company, project developers, and the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, got a close look at the solar panels and then watched as the first panels were hoisted to the building's roof. Once the 238-unit community opens next spring, the developer plans to make it possible for these students and others throughout the Chelsea school system to monitor the system and weather conditions on-line as part of an on-going educational program.
Energy produced by the 45.63 kw array of solar panels will be used to help light the common areas and the garage at Parkside Commons. The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, the state's development agency for renewable energy and the innovation economy, has given Parkside Commons a grant for the installation of the solar panels.
"The MTC wants this project to be a model for how other residential communities of this size can use clean energy," said Rick High, President of John M. Corcoran & Company, which is headquartered in Braintree. "As we all become more environmentally conscious, more and more people are taking an interest in the energy efficiency of their living environments. We're very excited to be using solar energy as one element of our commitment to energy efficiency at Parkside Commons."
Manufactured by Evergreen Solar, based in Marlborough, MA, the 45.63 kw Photovoltaic System is being installed by GroSolar, a Vermont-based company that has a branch office in Brockton, MA.
