A surprisingly large deposit of high-quality jade has been discovered in the Inner Mongolia region of China.

Local government officials estimated about 30 million cubic yards of the valuable stones, officially named Shetai jade, has been found exposed in Dashetai in Inner Mongolia, Xinhua reported Saturday. Experts said the rare jade is of high quality in terms of rigidity and size of the pieces, the Chinese state-run news agency reported.

The government is discussing how to develop the jade mine and build a processing center.

The precious mineral was formed 1.8 billion to 2.4 billion years ago, geological and jewel experts said.
