Local Air-Service Cuts Matthew Hager Alliance For Aviation Across America Washington, D.C.
Editor, New Era:
The potential Essential Air Service cuts to Lancaster Airport have the potential to do economic damage to the surrounding area and hurt the pilots and small businesses that rely on them.
While many communities are ignored by commercial airlines, Lancaster County is one of the few that benefits from local air service. This service allows businesses and residents to stay easily and quickly connected to other parts of the state and to the country. Without the airport, many small businesses may be forced to cut off service to towns and communities that depend on them.
Not only that, Lancaster Airport contributes significantly to the local economy to the tune of over $38 million through employment, car rentals, airport purchases and hotels, not to mention that air ambulances and emergency-response personnel utilize the airport in case of an emergency.
The government must continue to provide EAS funding to Lancaster Airport. Without it, servicing airlines will pull out, leaving the citizens and small businesses of Lancaster County behind and putting an essential lifeline for residents at risk.
