Train service resumed Sunday afternoon between New Jersey and New York’s Penn Station, but passengers were warned to expect delays through the evening.

Service was restored at about 3 p.m. EST. It had been suspended in both directions just before 9 a.m. when an NJ Transit train approaching Penn Station struck overhead wires, the agency told The (New Jersey) Star-Ledger.

Agency spokesman Dan Stessel said 300 passengers were on the train. They were transferred to a Long Island Rail Road train and taken to Penn Station by 11 a.m.

Amtrak service also was suspended because of the incident.

The service interruption affected an estimated 17,000 passengers.
