Rosendin Electric Named Sub-Contractor of the Year By Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal for Ohlone College ''Green Campus'' Project

Rosendin Electric, one of the largest private electrical contractors in the west, has been recognized by the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal as Sub-Contractor of the Year for the company's work installing sustainable solar power and lighting for the Ohlone College Newark Center for Health Sciences and Technology. Rosendin Electric also ranked number 24 in the Engineering News-Record's top 600 specialty contractors for 2007.
Rosendin Electric has installed 2,500 photovoltaic panels at the Ohlone College Newark Center to convert the DC current from sunlight to AC current, supplying up to 50 percent of the building's power. The solar power also is integrated into the building's management system, and with the aid of natural sunlight to provide the building with adequate lighting, the new building is both incredibly energy efficient and environmentally friendly.
The new Ohlone building also may qualify for Platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification, the highest such rating possible. As part of the environmental design that qualifies for LEED recognition, Rosendin designed an exterior lighting system with cutoff fixtures to maximize landscape lighting while eliminating light pollution in the neighborhood. Inside, the lighting also is designed so that minimal light escapes the building.
"Rosendin Electric has long been an advocate of environmentally friendly construction practices. In fact, we have an in-house Green Team that specializes in fostering sustainable design and construction," said Chris Sorauf, Senior Project Manager for Rosendin Electric. "Recognition for our work on the Ohlone Newark Science Center demonstrates that we can put the latest technology to work to create a building that relies on sustainable energy. And the great thing is we received recognition for designing a building where they will teach students about sustainable energy."
The Ohlone College Newark Center for Health Sciences and Technology is being touted as the first "green" community college campus in the country. As such, the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal also awarded the site with runner-up recognition for Green Project of the Year. In addition to incorporating sustainable energy sources such as solar power, the project uses other innovations, such as a geothermal recovery system instead of electricity to aid cooling and heating of the building. The building project also calls for recycled materials and safe handling of debris during construction.
Rosendin also recently received recognition as one of the top specialty contractors ranked by McGraw Hill's Engineering News-Record Magazine. Rosendin ranked 24 out of the top 600 specialty contractors for 2007. The findings were released October 15.
