Uptime Institute Recognizes Verizon Data Centers for Outstanding Record of Maintaining Service

NEW YORK, Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ — Verizon tops the list of 17 companies honored by the Uptime Institute’s Site Uptime Network with its 2007 Continuous Availability Award. The award recognizes companies with data centers that have not had a facilities-related outage for at least one year.

The institute recognized 31 such data centers throughout North America. Verizon has eight centers on the list, more than any other company. In addition, Verizon’s Burlington, Mass., center was one of only two centers honored for not having had a facility outage in 11 years, the longest period in the institute’s history.

A facilities-related outage is a power-related or electrical outage at a data center.

“In a business where an hour of downtime can result in millions of dollars of lost revenue, it is critical that customers are confident that the networks they depend on are continuously up and running,” said Lee A. Brathwaite, vice president of Real Estate for Verizon Services Corp., a centralized operations business unit that manages real-estate services, supply-chain services and financial operations for all Verizon companies.

Salvatore Cefalu, vice president for Verizon Information Processing Services, said, “These awards demonstrate that Verizon continues to be an industry leader in data-center operations. And, even with this success, we will continue to take steps to ensure that the reliability of our operations continues to be at the forefront of our industry.”

Overall, Verizon data-center operations have a five-year availability average of 99.9992 percent.

The Uptime Institute issued the awards recently at its Site Uptime Network fall 2007 conference in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Ken Brill, executive director of the Uptime Institute, said, “Uninterrupted uptime requires attention to literally thousands of details. This requires a strong focus on things like lurking vulnerabilities and benchmarking. They are our best teachers because they remind us that uptime is the result of very diligent hard work that is largely invisible — until failure occurs.

In addition to the Burlington data center, the institute recognized the following Verizon centers for their continuous availability for periods ranging from one to nine years:
