Quanta to Use Sequans Chips for Mobile WiMAX

Semiconductor manufacturer Sequans Communications has announced that its chips will be used by original design manufacturer Quanta Computer for its new line of mobile WiMAX devices.

Sequans said that the two companies have been jointly working for over a year to develop multiple devices based on its SQN1130 mobile WiMAX chip. The devices manufactured include expresscards, PCI express minicards, personal computer memory card international association (PCMCIA) cards, secure digital input/output (SDIO) modules, IADs, USB dongles, and indoor customer premise equipment (CPE).

The SQN1130 chip was recently awarded 'best chip design' by WiMAX World USA, a WiMAX focused annual event. The company claims that the chip is WiMAX Forum Wave 2 ready, including both PHY and MAC layers and 2X2 MIMO, and delivers high throughput, low power consumption and improved receiver sensitivity.

"Using Sequans' chips enables us to deliver high performing, highly reliable Mobile WiMAX devices to global markets," said Frank Jiang, president at Quanta Microsystems, the wireless communications devices subsidiary of Quanta.

Meanwhile, in its efforts to expand the WiMAX collaboration, Sequans extended its partnership with Agilent Technologies for Wave 2 Mobile WiMAX mobile station and base station protocol testing in October 2007. In the same month, Sequans also entered into a test technology partnership with Aeroflex for the development of their WiMAX solutions.
