Samsung to Start Manufacturing 50nm NAND Flash Memory Chips

Posted on: Friday, 23 November 2007, 12:00 CST

Samsung Electronics has announced to begin mass production of 50nm NAND flash memory chips at it manufacturing facility in Texas, US, which was opened in June 2007 with an investment of $3.5 billion over 2007-08.

NAND is one of the two types of flash memory used to provide higher storage and faster speeds in USB drives, memory cards, and MP3 players.

"Samsung will make the chips from 300-millimeter wafers using advanced 50-nanometer level process technology at the plant in Austin, Texas," said James Chung, a company spokesman as reported by Marketwatch.

The new line is expected to initially produce 20,000 16-gigabit NAND flash chips in a month, which be raised to 60,000 chips by 2008.

Samsung also announced an investment of $2.2 billion to expand its LCD production for 46-inch and 52-inch televisions.
