Video and Networking Applications Drive the North American Commercial Geostationary Satellite Transponder Market

Posted on: Wednesday, 28 November 2007, 09:00 CST

The explosion of video applications and the consequent need of more bandwidth to distribute it, spurs the growth of the commercial geostationary satellite transponder markets in North America. The unexpected fast growth of high definition (HD) is a significant driver, with video services accounting for 40 percent of total demand for transponders in 2006.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.space.frost.com), Commercial Geostationary Satellite Transponder Markets for North America, reveals that this market earned revenues of $2.44 billion in 2006 and estimates this to reach $2.95 billion in 2011.

"The exponential growth of video services is the most significant driver for the North American commercial geostationary satellite transponder market," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Natalie Bentz. "The growing share of video programming in the market is driven by ethnic and HD channels."

With regard to leased transponder capacity share by band in 2006, C-band accounted for 30.2 percent, Ku-band for 69.5 percent, and Ka-band for only 0.2 percent. During the forecast period, supply and demand for Ka-band expects to grow and decrease for C-band capacity. This trend signifies a shift of leased transponder capacity from C-band to Ka-band for applications requiring smaller outdoor units, with higher bandwidth consumption and more efficient use of the spectrum.

Intense competition from terrestrial wireline and wireless technologies will limit the penetration that satellite applications can achieve. Furthermore, advancements in compression technologies could decrease the usage of transponder capacity and inherent limitations in satellite technology will also remain an important hurdle that providers need to overcome.

"In the face of intense competition, satellite service providers must develop new strategies to overcome significant obstacles," notes Bentz. "These include forming alliances with operators already in the market and developing new applications in the emerging services."

Overall, video distribution and emerging networking applications are the future of satellite services and the leasing of transponders. Since video services and networking applications in the Ku-band expect to be the largest revenue generators throughout the forecast period, operators should dedicate their resources to meeting demand in these promising markets.
