Peruvian bus crash kills eight, injures 36
LIMA, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) — The death tolls in a bus crash in southern Peru Monday increased to eight after police announced onemore person has died. The youngest victim was a six-year-old girl, and two British tourists were among the 36 injured, said the police.
Earlier reports had said that seven schoolchildren were killed and 14 others injured after a bus, with 52 people onboard, lost control on a curve at around 4:30 a.m. local time (0930 GMT) and plunged 50 meters down a ravine into the Pachacha River in the southern Peruvian province of Apurimac.
The bus, belonging to local company Cial, was traveling on the Challhuanca-Abancay Highway, some 950 km southeast of Peru’s capital, when the accident occurred. Among the passengers were three teachers, four parents and more than 30 pupils on their way to the southern Peruvian city of Cusco for the celebration of the end of the 2007 school year.
