Englewood Senior Receives Energy-Saving Holiday Gift Valued at $10,000

Posted on: Wednesday, 5 December 2007, 12:00 CST

CHICAGO, Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- ComEd is giving an early holiday gift to an Englewood senior citizen today. Carrie Hamilton's home has been selected to receive a free energy-efficiency home makeover valued at $10,000. As an extra bonus, ComEd employees will also decorate her home with energy efficient LED (light emitting diode) lighting and donate a Christmas tree.

The early Christmas gift is part of ComEd's efforts to educate customers on ways they can conserve energy, save money on their bills and help the environment.

Over the next several weeks, Hamilton's home also will undergo energy-saving improvements, paid for by ComEd as part of its CARE Energy Efficiency Showcase program. Planned improvements to Hamilton's home include installing a high-efficiency air conditioning compressor unit, replacing old appliances with ENERGY STAR(R)-rated appliances, and putting in smart power strips and compact fluorescent light bulbs. ComEd also is addressing air leakage and "cold spots" near windows and doors.

"It is critical that we educate and empower our customers about the steps they can take to conserve energy and help manage their bills," said ComEd Chairman and CEO Frank M. Clark. "The Energy Efficiency Showcase serves as a great model for customers looking for practical ways to make improvements in their homes and save money."

To select Hamilton's home for the makeover, ComEd worked with 17th Ward Alderman, Latasha Thomas. Hamilton's home is the final of a dozen homes of varying sizes, types, and ages throughout northern Illinois to receive a CARE energy efficiency overhaul. Since the program began, ComEd has made over homes in Joliet, Elgin, Glenview, Waukegan, Bolingbrook, Maywood, Glen Ellyn, Freeport and Calumet City. The program kicked off on July 11, 2006 when ComEd began two home makeovers in Chicago and Rockford as part of the launch of the CARE program. The ComEd-funded projects have included installing energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, ENERGY STAR appliances or light bulbs, improving insulation, weather-stripping doors and windows, or other improvements, saving customers up to 40 percent on energy bills

Home makeovers have been an effective way to educate customers about energy efficiency. Customers can visit http://www.comedcare.com/ to watch how-to videos of completed energy-efficiency improvements, including do-it-yourself tips.

"Living on a fixed income, I have to be very prudent about how I spend money," said Hamilton. "With ComEd's help I won't have to be as concerned about my electric bill being too high. It will be more manageable for me. Plus my home will be more comfortable."

According to ENERGY STAR(R), part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the typical U.S. family spends more than $1,600 per year on home utility bills. Customers' monthly bills are based on the amount of energy they use, and lowering consumption can reduce those bills. By taking a few simple energy-saving steps, such as using compact fluorescent light bulbs and keeping central air conditioners at the highest comfortable temperature, customers can cut their energy bills significantly.

"Homeowners have been seeing and hearing ads giving advanced notice to the impending utility rate increases, and ComEd has been very aggressive in educating my ward's residents about the huge advantages of energy conservation," said Alderman Thomas. "They are in the ward year-round working with my office to get the word out about money saving practices that all consumers of energy should be observing. I'm just grateful that the CARE Energy Efficiency Showcase chose one of my constituents to assist. This is more than a gift -- it's a blessing for the Hamilton family."
