Although value growth experienced a gradual slow down over the review period, growth still remained favourable in 2006. With steady economic progress leading to higher disposable income and strong consumer confidence, all packaged foods, except meal replacement products, posted positive growth in 2006. Meal replacement products failed to take off for the fourth year running partially due to the discontinuation of the leading brand Slim Fast by Unilever Australia Ltd, as well as the bad light in which fad replacement diets were cast.
Australians yearn for healthy and premium products
The push for healthier living through many government initiatives and related health bodies impelled Australians to include more nourishing foods in their diets to meet the recommended daily allowances. Healthy eating is likely to reduce imminent health risks because Australia has been facing critical health problems over the years. Hence 2005 and 2006 saw manufacturers launch numerous healthy alternatives to standard products such as reduced-sugar and reduced-fat items, like McCain Healthy Choice Pizza that was approved by the National Heart Foundation to be low in cholesterol and saturated fats, a healthier option for all pizza lovers.
An increase in disposable income allowed consumers to live more comfortably, which was undoubtedly observed through their diets. With hectic lifestyles, consumers wanted to reward themselves with high-quality indulgent treats and snacks for which they were prepared to pay that little bit more. In line with this, manufacturers continued to revamp their existing products and launch new ones to target the 'premium' area.
Demographic changes
Lifestyles and work, combined with demographics, had a great impact on consumer diets. For example, more Australians switched to meal substitutes, such as liquid breakfasts and snack bars, to eat on the move, and for sustenance throughout the day. With more single-person households, brand messages and portfolios were adjusted to reflect the predominance of adults over traditional large families. Products aimed at children were perceived to contain high levels of sugar and fat, which was not in line with the health trend that was all the rage during the review period. Adults remained the largest consumer base as parents are usually more selective over what their children consume.
Artisanal and private label products dominate
In Australia's highly-fragmented packaged food industry, artisanal and private label products held the top two positions, with other branded players far behind. The former were exceptionally popular in staple baked goods and dairy products. Owing to the success of franchised bakeries, artisanal baked goods gained increasing share over the review period, boosted by the rapid expansion of the stores nationwide. The large corporate bakeries invested in improving product quality across the board, enriching products with vitamins and nutritional ingredients.
Optimistic outlook in spite of slower performance
Sales of packaged food are expected to record a fairly healthy growth rate over the forecast period. Convenient foods will continue to drive value growth in various areas such as chilled processed food and ready meals. With increasingly busy schedules and a rise in number of single-person households, consumers are less likely to prepare meals themselves but instead look to convenient solutions for a quick, satisfying meal.
