Suez Energy International will partner with Codelco, the world’s leading copper producer, to build GNL Mejillones S.A., an LNG regasification terminal in Mejillones, in the northern Chilean region of Antofagasta. Investments will total US$500 million. In a first – fast track – phase (2009-12), the project includes construction of a jetty and an onshore LNG regasification terminal with a sendout capacity of 5.5 million m3 of gas, sufficient to produce 1,100 MW of electricity. An LNG vessel with a storage capacity of approx. 135,000 m3 will be permanently moored and serve as a floating storage.

In a second phase, an onshore storage tank of 160,000 m3 will be built. Shortly, feasibility studies for the tank, which will convert the project into a long-term solution, will be initiated. Construction will take three years. SUEZ Global LNG will supply the LNG for the first three years of operations. Copyright Oildom Publishing Company of Texas, Inc. Nov 2007
