US-based non-hazardous solid waste services firm Allied Waste Industries has commenced operations at its two new landfill gas-to-energy facilities in Virginia.
The Brunswick county landfill in Lawrenceville, Virginia is an 8MW generating facility that has been developed with Ingenco, which builds, owns and operates distributed generation facilities. The facility, which commenced operations in mid-October 2007, can generate enough electricity to power over 5,000 homes.
The King & Queen county landfill in Little Plymouth, Virginia is a 12MW generating facility that also has been developed with Ingenco. The facility is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 7,500 homes. It is expected to commence operations by the end of December 2007.
The company currently has 52 landfill gas-to-energy projects underway, including 41 electric generation plants, operating at facilities owned or operated by the company's subsidiaries across the country.
Donald Slager, president and COO, said: "We are pleased to partner with Ingenco in two new Virginia gas-to-energy facilities. Innovative alternative energy projects such as these exemplify Allied Waste's commitment to our customers, our communities and to sound environmental stewardship, and thus are under consideration at dozens of our landfills nationwide."
