Wind Energy Could Power Britain By 2020

December 10, 2007

A massive expansion of offshore wind farms could generate enough electricity to power every home in Britain, a report says.

Officials in London and Edinburgh are discussing Whitehall’s Strategic Environmental Assessment, which could boost wind energy 30-times by 2020, Scotland’s The Herald reported Monday.

The 7000 turbines would represent one turbine per half-mile of coastline.

The move is part of a European Union wide goal of renewable energy providing 20 percent of Europe’s energy by 2020 and turn Britain into one of the world leaders in wind power.

The implementation of the wind-energy units would also reduce the need for a new generation of nuclear power stations since renewable energy could provide enough electricity for all of Britain’s homes.
