Goes on Green ('GoG'), an alternative energy company based in Harrogate, Yorkshire has applied for planning permission to site the first phase of its £30 million biodiesel facility in North Shields, Tyne & Wear.
GoG is being backed by Al Tayyar Energy ('ATE'), a clean energy development and investment company, headquartered in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. ATE has a strong track in successfully investing in other alternative energy projects around the world. It will be the majority investor in GoG and has provided initial financing.
The new facility is planned at a four acre site at the Simon Storage terminal, an existing chemical/petrochemical storage facility.
Subject to achieving planning consent with North Tyneside Council, GoG plans to develop a fully-scaled operation in two phases:
to manufacture 30,000 tonnes of biodiesel per annum within 12 months of plant commissioning
to create 180,000 tonnes of diesel per annum when the facility reaches full production within 36 months
The facility will utilize a multiple range of feedstocks, which include fats, greases and non-edible animal fats within a clean production environment.
Dr Ing Giuseppe Simeone, Chairman and Co-Founder of GoG said, 'By selecting a novel means of processing a wide range of feed stocks of fats and oils, we are opening up a new platform to expand biodiesel production in the UK and ultimately internationally.'
Dr Granville Smith, CEO of ATE said, 'Following over a year of intensive research into biodiesel technology, we are very excited about bringing this facility to Tyne & Wear and to creating new jobs within a modern centre of production excellence.'
'The UK has committed to achieving significant levels of biofuel production and is providing important incentives to support investment in this market, both of which have been important factors in ATE's decision to make its first global biodiesel investment in this country.'
Market opportunity for Biodiesel
The market for the production of biodiesel remains in its infancy. The UK has set a target of generating 5% of total UK fuel sales from biofuels by 2010/11. In 2005, total UK fuel sales were 49 billion litres which would mean biodiesel sales of 2.45 billion litres. At present there is a biodiesel production capacity in the UK of only 389 million litres. Additionally, by 2020 the UK is aiming to achieve a 20% contribution of green energy for transport.
