SPX and Hitachi Awarded Power Station Equipment Contract

December 12, 2007

US-based diversified manufacturing firm SPX Corporation has announced that its thermal equipment and services affiliate has been awarded a $235 million contract together with Hitachi Power Africa to provide critical products for Eskom’s new Medupi power station in South Africa.

Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned utility company, recently awarded a contract to Hitachi Power Europe and its subsidiary Hitachi Power Africa to manufacture, build and supply steam generators for the Medupi power station.

It will be the first coal-fired power plant to be built in the country in 20 years. It will be located near Lephalale, in the Limpopo province. Eskom expects the power station to begin supplying power to the national grid in the next four to five years.

Under the $235 million contract, SPX will supply Balcke Duerr-branded pulse jet fabric filters and air pre-heaters, and manufacture pressure parts for six 800MW boilers.

Drew Ladau, president of SPX thermal equipment and services, said: “Our highly efficient and environmentally friendly filters and air pre-heaters will help reduce emissions and enhance the productivity of Medupi.”
