Arrested Azeri Opposition Newspaper Editor Ends Hunger Strike
BAKU. Dec 15 (Interfax) – Ganimet Zahidov, the editor-in-chief of the Azeri opposition newspaper Azadlig (Freedom), who was arrested in November this year, has stopped a weeklong hunger strike.
“Zahidov stopped his strike today, taking into account numerous requests by leaders of parties, human rights organizations, and colleagues,” Azadlig editor Azer Akhmedov told Interfax on Saturday.
The Yasamal District Court in Baku earlier gave Zahidov a two- month arrest, and the Baku city court of appeals upheld the ruling.
Zahidov was found guilty of disorderly conduct and deliberate infliction of bodily damages. To protest his arrest, Zahidov went on a hunger strike on December 8.
