Department responds to fires built in woods
The Myrtle Beach Fire Department responded to a wooded area on Robert M. Grissom Parkway between 10th Avenue North and U.S. 501 twice on Tuesday for reported fires, said fire Battalion Chief Bruce Arnel.
No one was injured in the fires, which were built for warmth by the occupants of an area populated by the homeless, Arnel said.
He said burn permits are required for such fires within city limits, but Myrtle Beach fire officials allowed the fire Tuesday because they considered it necessary for the people using it, considering the cold weather.
Arnel said firefighters gave those people responsible for the fire instructions on how to keep the blaze safe and manageable. He said firefighters cautioned that if those guidelines were not followed, firefighters would extinguish the fire.
