Bombardier Signs 32 Million Euro Contract for Automated People Mover System at London Gatwick Airport, United Kingdom
Posted on: Wednesday, 19 December 2007, 09:00 CST
Bombardier Transportation has signed a contract with BAA Ltd to replace the existing inter-terminal transit system at London Gatwick Airport in the United Kingdom. The contract, valued at approximately 32 million euros ($46 million US), includes the supply of six BOMBARDIER CX-100 vehicles and all of the electrical and mechanical equipment for the fully automated system. The 1.2 km dual-lane system is scheduled for completion in spring 2010.
Bombardier's Pittsburgh, USA facility will be responsible for the design and supply of the driverless vehicles, automatic train control, communications and power distribution systems, station platform doors, as well as project management, systems engineering and integration and test and commissioning. The new vehicles will replace the Airport's original fleet and will operate on the existing elevated guideway that connects the North and South terminals. During implementation of the project, one lane of the dual-lane guideway will remain operational to minimize disruption of service between the terminals. Bombardier supplied the existing inter-terminal transit system in 1987.
Colin Walton, Chairman and Chief Country Representative in the UK commented, "We are very proud of BAA's decision to select our APM technology, which will serve the demanding transit requirements of Gatwick Airport." Gatwick, the second largest airport in the UK, welcomes 33 million passengers per year.
Raymond T. Betler, President of Bombardier Transportation, Total Transit Systems, said, "We appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve both BAA Ltd and Gatwick Airport Ltd In other airports around the world, the CX-100 APM has consistently surpassed availability levels of 99 per cent - a clear indication of its high value and competitiveness in today's APM market."
The highly reliable automated people movers from Bombardier Transportation have served commuters in major cities and international airports around the world for over 35 years. These include Frankfurt, Germany; Rome, Italy; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Singapore; Madrid, Spain; London, United Kingdom; Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando, Pittsburgh, Seattle-Tacoma, Tampa and San Francisco, USA. Bombardier Transportation is currently implementing APM systems for Beijing Capital, Las Vegas McCarran and London Heathrow Airports, as well as an urban APM system in Guangzhou, China.
