45,000 Likely to Use Buses
TRANSPORT operator Nexus says it is expecting up to 45,000 passengers using bus services laid on for Boxing Day.
Details of 61 services running on Boxing Day can be found on the Nexus website, www.nexus.org.uk and by calling North East Traveline on 0871 200 22 33.
All the buses will charge a pounds 1.20 flat adult fare making it easy for families and friends to stay in touch over Christmas.
Metro and the Shields Ferry will also run a limited service on Boxing Day in Christmas Travel arrangements confirmed by Nexus.
Coun Dave Wood, chairman of the Passenger Transport Authority, said: “We make a point of funding Boxing Day bus services because commercial operators are unwilling to do so.
“Past experience tells us that up to 45,000 people will use these buses, keeping in touch with their nearest and dearest on Boxing Day, whether or not they have access to a car.
“It’s just one way the PTA makes sure public transport is there when people need it.
“These core service will operate close to the Sunday timetable”.
