disAbled for Change Group Helps Train RRTA Drivers
By Lancaster New Era, Pa.
Dec. 20–Lancaster disAbled for Change and Justice on Saturday completed training about 200 Red Rose Transit Authority drivers on how to provide better service to passengers with disabilities.
Saturday’s session was the last of 22 led this fall by the advocacy group using a $10,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council.
Each session was attended by about eight to 10 bus and para transit drivers.
The sessions, lasting two to four hours, included role-playing exercises that put drivers in situations that passengers with disabilities face when boarding RRTA vehicles.
Also addressed were customer service issues, how to best communicate with passengers who have visual or hearing disabilities and how to properly secure wheelchairs.
The sessions concluded with RRTA drivers, RRTA management and passengers with disabilities discussing concerns about service and possible remedies.
