Posted on: Friday, 21 December 2007, 18:00 CST

LONG ISLAND CITY, N.Y., Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- As New York City gears up for the approaching holiday season, FreshDirect and City Harvest are continuing to work hard to help the city's neediest neighbors enjoy a home-cooked meal. FreshDirect, one of the nation's leading online gourmet food purveyors and delivery services, and City Harvest, a non-profit food rescue program, are ensuring every day that surplus food doesn't go to waste but to the New York families that need it the most.

As one of City Harvest's largest food suppliers, FreshDirect has donated over 110,000 pounds of food this holiday season, helping to put meals on the tables of 440,000 hungry New Yorkers. This year, FreshDirect was recognized by City Harvest for "extraordinary dedication," and the online gourmet food purveyor intends to maintain that level of commitment through the coming years.

"We are so grateful to Fresh Direct for their commitment to fighting hunger in our city" said Jennifer McLean, Vice President of Operations for City Harvest. "Since we began working with them in 2004, Fresh Direct has donated over 3 million pounds of fresh food including tons of meat, poultry and dairy products; items that are in short supply at city soup kitchens and food pantries."

Some facts about the work FreshDirect does with City Harvest: -- Last year, FreshDirect gave City Harvest more than 1,082,000 pounds of fresh, wholesome food. -- FreshDirect ranks among City Harvest's top five food donors (among more than 1,900 last year). -- FreshDirect food donations travel to hundreds of City Harvest's local partner programs. These efforts feed more than 260,000 hungry men, women and children every week. About City Harvest

Now serving New York City for 25 years, City Harvest is the world's first food rescue organization, dedicated to feeding the city's hungry men, women, and children. This year, City Harvest will collect 20 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry, including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers, and farms. This food is then delivered free of charge to more than 600 community food programs throughout New York City using a fleet of 16 trucks and volunteers on foot.
