Youth 'Gear Up' For Agricultural Technology Display Competition at 2008 PA Farm Show

HARRISBURG, Pa., Dec. 28 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Life-size exhibits created by seven Future Farmers of America chapters will showcase agricultural advances at the 2008 Pennsylvania Farm Show's Agricultural Technology Display competition.
In its third year, the theme of this year's competition is "Gearing Up for the 21st Century." Students are allowed to use their own materials and props -- including farm equipment -- to develop a display and demonstration that showcases advances made in agriculture. The exhibits will be on display in the Expo Hall of the Farm Show Complex.
"Youth are the future leaders of Pennsylvania agriculture, our state's number one industry, and the benefits of this competition are two-fold," said Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff. "We're educating consumers and producers about trends in the industry while encouraging youth to explore the many opportunities available to them in agriculture. By combining these efforts, we can keep Pennsylvania agriculture growing for generations to come."
Each of the seven participating Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapters will receive $500 for participating and will have the opportunity to win another $500 in prize money awarded by judges, as well as a $250 "People's Choice" award decided by show visitors. Winners will be announced on Saturday, Jan. 12, in the Expo Hall.
Last year's winner was the Manheim FFA Chapter display, which highlighted problems associated with an increasing world population. The display showed population growth over the last few decades, from three billion in 1960 to more than 6.5 billion in 2007, and a ticker counted the increase of the population per second.
The Pennsylvania Farm Show is the largest indoor agricultural event in the nation, featuring nearly 8,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits and 270 commercial exhibitors. The eight-day show runs Jan. 5-12, at the Farm Show Complex & Expo Center. Admission is free and parking is $5.
