Mud, Miscalculation Thwart Plane Takeoff

Posted on: Sunday, 30 December 2007, 18:00 CST

A plane carrying 180 passengers was evacuated after it made a wrong turn and got stuck in the mud during takeoff at Kansas City International Airport Sunday.

In a dense fog, pilots of the 6:40 a.m. United Airlines flight to Denver mistook an airport service road for the runway and turned onto it, The Kansas City Star reported. The Boeing 747's nose and right landing gear then stuck in mud, leaving the passengers stranded.

No one was injured, airport officials said, and buses were dispatched to take passengers back to the terminal where the airline made alternative travel arrangements for them.
