Convicted Felon Held in Explosives Theft

Police in Ticaboo, Garfield County, are concerned that a convicted felon was allowed access to and was eventually able to steal explosives from a uranium mine where he worked.

Law officers found two sticks of dynamite, a detonation card and a blasting cap in the car of a 43-year-old Ticaboo man on Dec. 18, according to Garfield County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Becki Bronson.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has been called in to help officers investigate the alleged theft. Meanwhile, the man has been arrested and charged with second-degree felony unlawful possession of explosives, according to Bronson. He is being held in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Garfield County Sheriff Danny Perkins is concerned that a convicted felon was allowed to access explosives in Garfield County, he said in a statement Monday.

The arrested man was employed at Dynatec Mining Corp. when he was found with the explosives.
