Kenya to Use Soldiers Distribute to Relief Food to Clash-Torn Areas
Text of report by Kenyan private Kiss FM radio on 2 January
The government says it will soon start using the military in the areas affected by the violence.
Government spokesman Alfred Mutua says the soldiers will be used to transport and distribute food and other supplies to internally displaced people in the Rift Valley.
In the meantime, Police Spokesman Eric Kiraithe says they are pursuing leads that could help them arrest the financiers of those perpetrating violence in Rift Valley Province.
And despite today being an official working day, most premises still remain closed in Nairobi’s central business area as tension continues to prevail. Workers are standing outside their premises waiting for a more relaxed atmosphere in order to open their shops as police continue to patrol most areas. Transport is however not a problem as matatus [public transport vehicles] are being allowed into town although some are charging increased fares.
