Ignalina Npp Increases Electricity Output 13.3% in 2007
VILNIUS. Jan 2 (Interfax) – Lithuania’s Ignalina nuclear power plant generated 9.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2007, compared with 8.65 billion in 2006, the plant’s press service told Interfax.
The nuclear power plant sold 9.04 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity last year, against 7.94 billion kilowatt-hours in 2006.
Lithuania decommissioned the first of the two power-generating units of the Ignalina nuclear power plant in late 2004, in line with its obligations to the European Union. The plant will be shut down completely in 2009.
Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland plan to build a new nuclear power plant before 2015 to replace the Ignalina nuclear power plant. It will have two Western-made reactors with a capacity of 3,200 – 3,400 megawatt.
