NEW YORK, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ — Growing populations and thirsts are expected to drive sales of kids’ beverages to $5.8 billion by 2012 on a compound annual growth rate of five percent — more than double the historical rate of two percent — according to Kids’ Beverages in the U.S., a new report from market research publisher Packaged Facts.

After seeing growth of 5% in 2006, Packaged Facts estimates that total U.S. retail sales of kids’ beverage products declined 4% from $4.7 billion in 2006 to $4.6 billion in 2007. With the recent focus on childhood obesity — including industry pledges to curb advertising and switch to healthier beverages in school vending machines — several of the large, traditional kids’ beverage categories showed soft sales, while kid-targeted bottled waters and nutritional/sports drinks experienced robust growth.

Changing consumer behaviors and demands for healthier products are sparking new product introductions and creating new opportunities to expand margins. Single-serve and smaller portions will continue leading innovation in the kids’ beverage market as three uber-trends converge in the greater food and beverage industry: convenience, portion control, and healthier consumption.

“Driven by the trend toward more wholesome ingredients and products, benefits such as pure, real, organic, no artificial color and no preservatives have been appearing on more new kids’ beverages,” notes Cathy Minkler, Associate Editor of Packaged Facts. “High calcium, probably the oldest claim in the kids’ beverage arsenal, still has a strong showing, particularly as milk comes back into vogue and as the popularity of yogurt smoothies grows.”

Kids’ Beverages in the U.S. focuses on beverages that target kids in the 3- to 11-year-old age group, identifying key issues, trends, and consumer behaviors affecting the market. It also analyzes the sales performance of leading brands and market players. The report is available from Packaged Facts by visiting: https://www.packagedfacts.com/Kids-rsquo-Beverages-1635853/.
