It’s Your Duty Not to Pay This Bill

I. A. C. writes: My wife bought goods from the UK website of American company Abercrombie & Fitch. We were surprised to get a bill from courier FedEx for import duty and VAT, which we paid.

The website says any duties are payable by the company. I rang Abercrombie & Fitch and was put through to the US, but the message was that we had to pay and the website was incorrect.

THE website is quite clear. It says: ‘VAT is included in the merchandise price. The customer is not liable for import duties on shipments to the UK.

Abercrombie & Fitch will pay this fee.’ Spokesman William Douglas told me that FedEx had no authority to charge you.

‘That bill should have come to us and not the customer. We are speaking with FedEx about this matter,’ he said.

If you send Abercrombie & Fitch a copy of the bill, the company will send you a cheque to cover it..
