Encore Networks today announced that Mobil Satellite Technologies has selected Encore’s BANDIT™ line of environmentally hardened VPN routers for their satellite network solutions aimed at the public utilities market. MobilSat selected the BANDIT™ to provide the seamless migration of serial SCADA functions over legacy networks to secure, encrypted, satellite IP networks.

Since 1997 MobilSat has been providing satellite connectivity for fixed and mobile command centers, emergency management response, homeland security, network restoration and failover support, and construction sites requiring rugged network equipment.

“With MobilSat’s experience and understanding of the challenges providing satellite-based communications to remote areas, defining and delivering bundled broadband VPN solutions to utilities is a perfect niche for them,” stated Matthew Girard, Encore’s Director of Satellite Market Development. “By adding the hardened BANDIT to their VSAT product portfolio, MobilSat provides the solutions utilities need to respond to the stringent government mandated NERC requirements designed to improve the security of SCADA control and monitoring functions.”

“We are pleased with the versatility and ruggedness of the BANDIT,” said Bud Burton, MobilSat’s CEO. “It is ideally suited to meet the high performance satellite network demands in applications with little environmental controls commonly found in the utility space.”

The BANDIT™ family of IP+Legacy routers is available in both commercial grade and industrially hardened versions designed for use in water/waste operations, power distribution substations, oil and gas refineries and industrial plant floors. The BANDIT™ is a fully featured integrated router complete with firewall, terminal server, serial-to-IP conversion, legacy-to-IP conversion and VPN functionalities. Its EVDO capabilities can be utilized in either the primary or failover network port. The seamless cellular failover feature is ideally suited for Disaster Recovery applications.
