Transport Canada to Investigate 15-Passenger Van Crash, Create New Standards

Posted on: Tuesday, 15 January 2008, 12:00 CST

Transport Canada has launched an investigation into the reasons behind a van crash that killed seven members of a high school basketball team and the wife of the team's coach.

The driver lost control of the 15-passenger van on a highway near Bathurst early Saturday morning and crashed into an oncoming tractor trailer.

Jessie Chauhan, a spokesperson for road safety at Transport Canada, says a collision investigation team will examine the accident and make general recommendations on ways to improve driver safety.

She says Transport Canada will also consider the results of their probe when setting up a separate class of vehicles for 15-passenger vans, with a set of standards for them.

In the United States, the federal government has prohibited the purchase of new 15-seat passenger vans in schools, though older-model vans are still in use.

A study by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board concluded in 2002 that the stability of the 15-person vans decreases when fully loaded.

They are also banned from use in schools in Nova Scotia and many community service groups that transport youth are phasing them out.
