The Sun, Yuma, Ariz., James Gilbert Column: No One Injured in School Bus Accident
By James Gilbert, The Sun, Yuma, Ariz.
Jan. 15–No one was injured Tuesday morning in an accident in San Luis, Ariz., involving a private vehicle and a bus carrying preschool-age children.
The collision occurred about 8:30 a.m. at San Luis Lane and 9th Avenue when a Chicanos Por La Causa preschool bus was struck by a white Jeep Grand Cherokee in the area of the rear driver’s side wheel, according to the San Luis Fire Department.
“Neither vehicle had been going very fast,” said Luis Cebreros, public information officer for the fire department. “Both vehicles had been sitting at adjacent stop signs prior to the accident.”
The bus, which was in the neighborhood making pickups, was carrying four children between 2 and 4 years old.
“All the children were wearing restraint devices,” Cebreros said. “They weren’t even crying.”
Chicanos Por La Causa Migrant Head Start is a federally funded program that provides comprehensive developmental services for America’s low-income preschool children, plus social services for their families.
According to Cebreros, both vehicles were lightly damaged. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, according to the San Luis Police Department.
The driver of the white Jeep, a 20-year-old man, and the driver of the bus, a 40-year-old man, were uninjured. Both refused medical treatment.
