The company is planning more than $23 billion in capital expenditures over the next five years, including several proposed power plants in the Carolinas and Midwest.

"Rick's talent and leadership complement an experienced internal team of people and will help ensure success on these major investments in our energy infrastructure."
Before joining Duke, Haviland served as president and chief executive officer of the project execution group for Air Liquide. Prior to that, he held senior management positions at Calpine Corporation and Bechtel Power Corporation.
"Rick's deep history in major power project and construction management will be a great asset to Duke Energy as we begin construction of a state-of- the-art coal-fired power plant at Cliffside Steam Station in North Carolina, and an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) generator in Edwardsport, Ind.," Turner added. "He will also support the construction and project management of our planned Lee Nuclear Station in South Carolina, and lead our effort to construct new natural gas-fired generation at Buck and Dan River steam stations in North Carolina."
Haviland will also be responsible for construction and project management support on the company's non-regulated generation projects, including renewable wind energy, through Duke Energy Generation Services.
