EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Good prospects for PET bottles in dairy products
Fresh/pasteurised milk was launched in PET bottles in 2006 and proved a major success. Following Mlekovita's footsteps, other manufacturers also started to use PET bottles for milk, including SM Mackowy and discounter Biedronka for its private label range. Strong demand for milk positively influenced the overall development of PET bottles. Customers responded so positively, that Mlekovita installed two new PET production lines in order
meet demand in 2007.
Innovative packaging in canned/preserved ready meals
Canned/preserved ready meals saw new packaging during the review period. Ready meals trays were used for new products offered by Mispol SA and Graal SA. Ready meal trays keep food at room temperature without the need for refrigeration. Products packed in ready meal trays generally include a full meal that needs only to be heated up in a microwave oven.
Flexible plastic less popular in milk
Flexible plastic lost share in fresh/pasteurised milk due to its lack of convenience for producers and purchasers. Customers shifted towards more convenient packaging, such as liquid cartons. "Other" shaped liquid cartons gained popularity due to a higher functionality and security in transport in comparison to gable top liquid cartons.
Glass packaging gains share in baby food
The volume of glass packaging grew thanks to its growing usage in baby food. This was caused by strong demand for prepared baby food and "other" baby food to replace home-made meals. In spite of a declining birth rate, demand for baby food in glass jars is still rising as consumers seek convenience.
Convenient soup packaging receives customer approval
Plastic pouches were successfully introduced in UHT soup during the review period. This pack type, available since 2003, gained popularity thanks to its implementation by Mispol and Agros Nova in 2006. Customers appreciate its lightness and convenience. Pouches are also welcomed by retailers as they are easy to display on shelves.
Liquid cartons introduced in canned/preserved tomatoes
In canned/preserved chopped tomatoes, brick liquid cartons were launched in 2006. This packaging was introduced by Podravka Import-Export and found acceptance among consumers. Consumers are attracted by a light weight and small packaging size (390g) suited to single use.
Innovative pack types in gum
Growing competitiveness in gum boosted innovation in products and pack types. New pack types such as flexible plastic, plastic jars and blister and strip packs were launched. Mentos pastilles and boiled sweets also extended to chewing gum. In 2007, a new chewing gum under the Mentos brand was launched with liquid inside containing green tea.
