Union Fenosa has begun construction of a new 450MW combined cycle plant in Durango, Mexico that is scheduled to enter commercial operation in January 2010.
Union Fenosa said that it will invest approximately E270 million in the new Norte I facility, which will increase the company's installed capacity in Mexico to 2,000MW.
The company stated that the investment in the new Durango plant is envisaged in its Bigger Plan, which projects E9 billion of investment, of which E1.2 billion will be allocated to power generation outside Spain, particularly in the form of combined cycle gas turbines.
As part of its commitment to energy sustainability, Union Fenosa also plans sizeable investments in renewable energy in Mexico, where it is developing between 800MW and 1,300MW of wind power and 100MW of small hydro power projects. These projects represent an investment of approximately E1.2 billion.
