MONTREAL - Federal Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon came to Montreal Monday to announce $19.9 million in new projects to improve passenger rail and urban transit security.
In Quebec, the Montreal Transit Corporation gets the biggest chunk of the $6.5 million set aside for public transit operators in the province.
It will receive more than $3.7 million for projects to help revamp its communications network and surveillance operations.
TransLink, Metro Vancouver's transit authority, will receive roughly $7 million and most of the money-$5.2 million - is for communications equipment.
In Toronto, $1.1 million will be spent on measures to control access at busy Union Station.
The money is being provided under Transit-Secure, a three-year, $80-million federal cost-sharing program, which provides 75 per cent of the funding for the projects.
