Petrobras Announces Discovery of Gas and Condensate Field in Santos Basin
Brazilian energy major Petrobras has announced that the consortium formed by it and Portuguese oil and gas firm Galp Energia to explore block BM-S-24, in ultradeep Santos basin, has proved the existence of a large natural gas and condensate field within the Jupiter pioneer well.
The well is at a final depth of 5,252m, 290km off the coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro and 37km east of the Tupi area, at a water depth of 2,187m.
Petrobras said that the discovery is located in reservoirs at depths of some 5,100m. The hydrocarbon-bearing rock is more than 120m thick, and the area’s dimensions may be similar to that of the earlier Tupi discovery.
The consortium will reportedly proceed with the required activities and make the investments necessary not only to check this new field’s dimensions, but also to determine the natural gas and condensate-bearing reservoir characteristics.
Petrobras is the operator of the project with an 80% stake while Galp Energia has a 20% interest.
