Milford Road Crashes
THE last paragraph in the bus fire article (January 4, 2007) stated the previous bus fire in 2002 prompted calls for increased safety measures at the Homer Tunnel and better medical facilities in Te Anau.
Regarding the medical facilities, the Fiordland Health Trust, in 1998, contacted every bus company operating out of Queenstown to ask if they would like to contribute to upgrading the Te Anau facility – - not one replied — zilch! Nevertheless the small, dedicated group of volunteer ambulance and fire brigade personnel will continue to respond to the ever-increasing carnage on the Milford road.
Incidentally, there have been two previous coach fires in the Te Anau region. One just north of the town, the other just south. Both vehicles were gutted but, fortunately, there were no casualties.
