China wins first gold at Good Luck Beijing weightlifting tourney

BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) — Wang Mingjuan won host China its first gold medal at the Good Luck Beijing 2008 International Weightlifting Invitational Tournament from the women’s 53 kilograms category here on Tuesday.

Gold medalist in the 2006 Doha Asia Games and winner of women’s48 in the 2003 World Weightlifting Championships, Wang combined lifts of 92 in snatch with 113 in the clean and jerk to finish with 205.

The 23-year-old took the lead in the snatch as she lifted 92, two kilograms more than the silver medalist, her teammate Cen Lijuan.

Wang nailed down the gold medal after bronze medalist Suda Chaleephay of Thailand failed the third jerk at 114. Chaleephay lifted 89 in the snatch and finished 110kg in the clean and jerk to take the bronze with 199.

Cen combined lifts of 90 in the snatch with 111kg in the clean and jerk to win China a silver.

The 2008 International Weightlifting Invitational Tournament isone of the “Good Luck Beijing” test events before the 2008 BeijingOlympics. About 40 lifters from 14 countries and regions took partin four categories.
