Wabtec Receives Order for ECP Equipment for Southern Company Coal Train
Posted on: Friday, 25 January 2008, 12:00 CST
WILMERDING, Pa., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Wabtec Corporation today announced that it has received an order for Electronically Controlled Pneumatic (ECP) braking equipment from Southern Company, one of the nation's largest utilities and coal shippers.
Under the order, Wabtec's "ECP-4200" equipment will be installed on 300 existing coal cars owned by Southern Company. The first train set of ECP- equipped cars will begin hauling coal today on a BNSF Railway line that runs from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming to Alabama Power's Miller Steam Plant, with additional cars expected to be in service later in the first quarter.
With conventional train braking, the brakes are applied sequentially from one car in the train to the next. ECP technology provides graduated brake applications and releases simultaneously on all cars, and is designed to improve the safety of train control, based upon shorter stopping distances, reduced derailment risks, and improved brake system health monitoring. Wabtec has previously provided ECP braking equipment to railways in South Africa and Australia, where its reliability has been proven.
"We look forward to working with Southern Company and BNSF to demonstrate the safety, productivity and efficiency benefits of electronic braking in North America, and to determine the best ways to deploy the technology here," said Albert J. Neupaver, Wabtec's president and chief executive officer. "We believe this order and recently announced pilot projects for our Electronic Train Management System(R) show that momentum is building for new technologies in the rail industry, and we are pleased to be a leader in this effort."
Based in Atlanta, Southern Company is one of the largest generators of electricity in the nation, serving both regulated and competitive markets across the southeastern U.S. Southern Company and its subsidiaries have been serving the Southeast for more than 100 years.
