NXP Single Chip Solution Delivers Enhanced Multimedia & Connectivity to Ultra Low-Cost Handsets

Posted on: Thursday, 7 February 2008, 03:00 CST

NXP Semiconductors, the independent semiconductor company founded by Philips, today announced it is expanding its range of fully-integrated GSM/GPRS single-chip solutions for the Ultra Low-Cost (ULC) handset market with the Nexperia single chip solution PNX4902. Representing the ULC+ concept, this solution enables a new generation of high-quality, feature-packed cellphones at an ultra-low cost point. PNX4902 builds on the commercial success of PNX4901 by adding:

Tri-band capability (850/900, 1800, 1900) for global coverage

Bluetooth connectivity support

High-performance 8Ω driver for speakerphone functionality, without the need for an external IC or components, further lowering bill of materials cost

Extensive support for peripherals, including touchscreen interface and camera (using external co-processor)

Triband, which is largely taken for granted in the feature-phone segment, is a first in the ultra low-cost market and will enable millions of consumers to enjoy the benefits of worldwide mobile access. Bluetooth support on the other hand ushers in a new era of connectivity for the ULC+ market, allowing the device to communicate with PCs, hands-free headsets and other phones. The integrated 8Ω driver provides 500mW of output power, enabling speakerphone functionality without any external components.

Other key attributes of PNX4902 are its best-in-class RF performance and the industry's lowest power consumption. PNX4902 is based on NXP's Aero transceiver technology which has shipped into over 500 million handsets worldwide, and delivers robust RF performance across commonly encountered stress conditions in the field such as extreme temperature changes and declining battery voltage. Excellent call quality is maintained in both congested, urban environments and in remote areas with sparse network coverage. Features such as SAIC further boost an operator's network capacity. As an indication of PNX4902's world class power consumption, a talk time of 5 hours and standby time of 420 hours are achievable with a small, inexpensive 600mAh battery. This makes possible handset designs that are slim and yet offer excellent autonomy.

"Our latest GSM/GPRS single-chip solution enables a feature-packed multimedia phone with color screen, MP3 playback, Bluetooth and FM tuner connectivity, and international roaming, with a very low total bill of materials that delivers significant value to everyone in the mobile handset ecosystem," said Diwakar Vishakhadatta, Vice-President of the Entry Product Line, Business Line Cellular Systems, NXP Semiconductors. "Operators stand to benefit by delivering new value-added services to the mass market thereby gaining market share while raising ARPU. Network capacity is also enhanced through PNX4902's stellar RF performance and SAIC. For handset OEMs and ODMs seeking to differentiate their products in a fiercely competitive market, PNX4902 offers the ability to develop feature-rich, high-quality phones with best-in-class RF performance, industry-leading standby and talk times, at an ultra-low cost."

Key features of the Nexperia single chip solution PNX4902 include:

Digital and analog basebands, RF transceiver, power management and audio codec (including high-performance 8Ω driver) integrated on a single, monolithic CMOS IC, resulting in industry-lowest bill-of-materials cost for a given feature set

Triband support (850/900, 1800, 1900) for global coverage

ARM926EJ-STM with Java-Jazelle hardware acceleration

GPRS data capability (Classes 1-10), WAP browsing, MMS

40 voice polyphonic MIDI and MP3 ringtones

SD/MMC card support for mass storage

Bluetooth and FM tuner connectivity

Speaker phone noise suppression and echo cancellation

Selectable audio modes -- wideband audio (40-kS/s) and speech (8kS/s)

Robust hardware security blocks for implementing SIM lock, flash lock

Mature and proven R99 telecom stack, field-tested in 36 networks, on 4 continents

Single antenna interference cancellation (SAIC) for increased network capacity

Best-in-class RF performance and power consumption

Availability

The Nexperia Single Chip PNX4902 ULC solution for GSM/GPRS solution, with enhanced multimedia and connectivity, will be sampling in Q1 2008 and will enter mass production in Q4 2008.
