Republic Services Incorporates "Green" Initiatives Into Construction of New Corporate Office in Sunrise, Florida

Posted on: Thursday, 7 February 2008, 09:00 CST

Republic Services, Inc. (NYSE: RSG) announced today that plans to relocate the company's corporate office to the 1300 block of NW 136th Avenue in Sunrise are moving ahead. Construction is expected to be completed in 2008.

The move allows Republic to consolidate its corporate workforce at one location. Currently, Republic's corporate staff is housed in two separate locations; the main office in downtown Fort Lauderdale and a second location on NW 31st Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.

"Importantly, the move will allow all 170 corporate employees to work together in one location," said Jim O'Connor, Chairman and CEO of Republic Services, Inc.

The new building will be constructed with a number of "green" features that will enhance air quality and energy efficiency. Some of the features include:

-- Roof-top solar panels - 8 to 9% of the building's power will be supplied through solar energy panels located on the roof of the building. -- Three 10,000-gallon underground cisterns will collect rainwater for: -- Watering the landscape -- Flushing toilets -- High efficiency air conditioning and air handling units, including filters to ensure clean indoor air quality. -- Water saving, low-flow plumbing will be used throughout the building -- Solar reflective panels will reflect the sun's rays (heat) off of the roof -- An automatic daylight dimming system will be used to save energy. 37 skylights will provide daytime lighting inside the building. The dimming system will automatically lower the amount of artificial lighting in the building on sunny days. -- Increased amount of insulation to keep the building cool in the summer and warm in the winter. -- Protective glaze/tinting on windows to reflect sunlight to keep the building cooler in the summer. -- Maximize recycling content of building materials -- Maximize low emitting materials such as using formaldehyde-free materials -- Use of environmentally friendly cleaning products -- Recycling programs -- Interior office recycling program for paper, plastic, aluminum, and containers (glass and tin) -- Battery recycling program set up in conjunction with the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation

"This entire project has focused around recycling and energy efficiency," said Jim O'Connor. "Our efforts began in 2006 when we purchased an old building and decided to recycle as much of the building as possible rather than tearing it down. Ultimately, we saved more than 3,000 cubic yards of construction and demolition material from being landfilled."

In addition to the energy efficient features, the new building will provide extra benefits for employees. For example, the new design will incorporate a health and fitness center that will be open for all employees. The facility will also have an on-site training and educational facility.

The new corporate office will be 65,000 sq. ft. Miller Construction will serve as the general contractor for the construction project.
